Lucca Bike Tour – Overview

Throughout this cycling tour, we will cycle around the hills encircling Lucca, through olive groves, wine acreages, expanses of oak and cypress trees and gorgeoous woodlands. We will acquaint you with charming and intriguing hamlets in the locality and guide you amongst the preservation region of the Apuan Alps.

You will feast on cuisine and savor delicious wines typical to the area at our best-loved and superior eating establishments. Our professional team, Italian and English speaking, will tour you on roads that will take your breath away and reveal to you concealed artistic riches. Ample time will be had to unwind and rejuvenate by way of a tranquil after-cycle massage by one of our highly qualified therapists.

You will be greeted by our team at Pisa International Airport and transported to your Lucca accommodation. We will consume a simple lunch and prepare our bikes for an opening ride or “sgambatella” – an Italian colloquialism – to prepare our legs for the days ahead. Lucca’s scenic hills are a short ride from the centre.

We will salute the spectacular cycling holiday to come with an aperitivo at one of the many excellent enotecas. On return to the hotel, it will be time to prepare for dining at a first-class restaurant in the historical centre.

After a traditional Italian breakfast, you will be setup for today’s bike trip. We will cycle along new scenic routes before ascending Monte Serra.

This climb is a high level escalation, approximately 8km with a 6% average incline which we’ll handle at the appropriate stride whilst marvelling at the surrounding terrain. At the hilltop, we’ll take the opportunity to capture photographs and enjoy the vistas of Pisa and its acclaimed leaning tour. We will then ascend via Calci and Nozzano Castello.

A further 20km will be pedalled before tackling the final easy climb of 3.5 km where you’ll find the delightful Pieve S. Stefano submersed in stretches of old olive trees. Back at your hotel in Lucca another post-cycle massage will be in order after which you can take time to sightsee or just chill before eating.

After a nutritious morning meal, we will begin our ride along gentle woodland roads and pretty valleys to the medieval village of Fiano where a beautiful seaview awaits you.

Then a steady ascent will find us at Passo Sella amidst the amazing Apuan Alps National Park. In San Rocco, an ancient hamlet, we’ll ingest a well’earned homecooked lunch before taking on the descent. There will be some easy ascents and effortless declines otherwise called “mangia e bevi” (another Italian colloquialism), via Turrite Cava.

The remainder of the bike trip will take us alongside the Serchio River where we will delight at the vision of Ponte del Diavolo.
After relaxation back at your hotel, and prior to dinner, we will visit a local medieval winery to sample delicious wines.

Embrace the day at breakfast then prepare to cycle along fabulous routes dotted with old villas, before testing ourselves with a steady ascent.

Once we arrive at Matraia, we’ll pause to observe and photograph its renowned Roman-Catholic church. We will proceed through spectacular landscapes with vineyards and olive groves to Collodi and Montecarlo, a small charming ancient hamlet where many winemakers live. The valley views from here are stunning. Lucca’s Olive Oil and Wine Trail runs through Montecarlo taking in tours of its wine cellars and tastings of the hamlet’s food products.

Another post-cycle massage awaits you at your hotel followed by pastry sampling at the oldest Pasticeria in Lucca – all prior to preparing for dinner!

Leaving Lucca we’ll journey through fantastic terrain to pursue a short steady ascent that will see us taking in the amazing vista of Massaciuccoli and the Versilia coast.
Not far away Giacomo Puccini, the famous composer, lived and hunted in the area. We’ll pedal downwards and ride flat prior to the easy uphill ride of Monte Pitoro.

Once down the other side we’ll pursue our 3rd climb of 6.5km – 7% average incline – via Gombitelli, another small hamlet, and view the remains of its noteworthy castle and San Michele church. This will be an excellent place to consume a noroushing cyclist lunch. Pedalling downwards post lunch we’ll continue our cycling tour alongside the Serchio’s valley prior to reaching Lucca in time for a rejuvenating massage.

Post breakfast, we’ll pedal across the internal region to the Mediterranean sea.
We’ll cycle the flat scenic roads in unspoiled landscape through the wonderful Freddana Valley.

After an easy 3% ride leading to Monte Magno, we will descend to Camaiore and then cycle flat to Pietrasanta, famous for its marble and bronze artisans, sculptures and workshops.

From here we will begin a strenuous climb to Capriglia, a quaint seaside village with splendid views of the infinite sea and the Ligurian Gulf.

We’ll press on with an exciting descent taking in endless coastal views while proceeding back to Pietrasanta to be compensated by way of an authentic homecooked lunch of local delights. Continuing along the coastline via Viareggio we will return to Lucca for pre-dinner relaxation.

After our last breakfast, our guides will say their farewells before delivering you to your leaving point for your onward journey.
